Technologies of Note From Siggraph 2010

Just got back from the 2010 SIGGRAPH conferece which is something I go to once every three years or so. The conference is a must given my position with Ryerson University so I thought I’d highlight the technologies of note I saw at the conference…. They are in no particular order….

SONY Autostereoscopic Ray Modler Interactive TV Set – One of the neatest TV sets and things I saw at SIGGRAPH 2010. This is pretty much the TV set of the future being both 3D and interactive. Whether you are a developer, animator, gamer, educator and scientist or just interested in the latest 3D technology this is a must see firsthand.

iPi Soft Markerless Motion Capture – Software priced at  $999.00 US. Employs three camera’s (Playstation Camera’s in demo) and a laptop computer.

Tobii Unobtrusive Eye Tracking Technology – This technology allowed one to control computer interface by eye movement only. –

Tobii Glasses – Small Portable Eyeglass Style Eye Tracker Technology with small mobile data collector. –

DepthQ – 3D Projection System. Operates like Real 3D in terms of technology.

EyeTech TM-4 – EyeTracking Solutions – Able to track eyes watching sets from a distance. Great as a digital signage measurement tool.

3D Printers – There was a plethora of 3D printers at the show. Here are some of the ones we looked at….

3D Systems Projet 3D $8000 Industrial Level 3D Printer

Invision 3D Printers –

Stratasys – FORTUS and Dimension sst 1200es 3D Printers

uPrint 3D Printers

MakerBot 3D Printer –

Milling Machines – Are the reverse of 3D printers. They use a subtractive process that actually cuts out a model out of a  block of material.

Roland MDX-40A Milling Machine – The Roland MDX-40A is a desktop Subtractive Rapid Prototyping (SRP) system that offers product designers a major value. At less than half the cost of most additive systems, the MDX-40A produces prototypes out of a wide variety of non-proprietary materials with greater precision and better surface finish. The MDX-40A’s compact design makes it a perfect fit for offices and classrooms

DIYLILCNC Maker Mill – The DIYLILCNC project is a set of plans for an inexpensive, fully functional 3-axis CNC mill that can be built by an individual with basic shop skills and tool access. The DIYLILCNC can be built for around $700. This cost includes all the stock hardware and sheet material used in construction. –

SpacePilot Pro – has a smooth and intuitive 3D navigation is the patented six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) sensor. Iit can detect input as small as 4 micrometers (that’s about 1/25 of a human hair!). To operate simply push, pull, twist or tilt the 3Dconnexion Cap to pan, zoom and rotate. QuickView Navigation Keys extend the power of the controller cap by providing one-touch access to 32 standard views enabling users to instantly view models from any angle for improved error detection, design review and design presentation.

Planer 3D Computer Display with Nvidia 3D Glasses – Comming Soon…..

SpheroCam HDRHigh Dynamic Range + 3D Data Camera – The SpheroCam HDR we pioneered the use of HDR cameras for professional full spherical 360-degree image capturing: it is the first camera able to measure real-world luminosity values from the darkest shadow areas through to the brightest sunlight – with a single scan operation.Saw this three years ago and was convinced then (as n0w) this is ideal tool for creating 3D environments quickly.

Point Grey Prototype Worlds First USB 3.0 1080p Camera – produces RAW 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Point Grey Ladybug 3 – 15K Spherical Camera System. Video below shows how one can navigate spheriecal video by touch on an Apple iPad.

Point Grey Bumblebee2 XB3 – Stereo Imaging Camera

Autostereoscopy Lenticular 3D Photo Viewer with 5 zone 2D to 3D still image conversion.

2D to 3D (8 Zone) Video File Conversion – Too bad one can’t see it in this video because I shot it with a 2D video camera.

Fusion-io ioXtreme 80 and 160 gig solid state storage card – Blazingly fast storage. Will help speed up  transcoding.

PS PicoScan – Employs Pico Projector and DSLR Camera to 3D Scan objects. Also has body scanner that uses larger projectors and a  different imaging system MEPHISTO CS.

3Dvia – Build games and simulations online…..

GigaPan Gigapixel Attach your camera to it, then the EPIC directs one through the steps to capture a gigapixel image. You then set the upper left and lower right corners of your panorama and the EPIC works out how many photos your camera will need to take, hundreds or even thousands, and automatically organizes them into the correct rows and columns needed to capture your panorama. The robotic arm clicks away, capturing amazing detail in a short amount of time.

High Dynamic Range HDTV Video Camera –

Hardcore Detinator PC’s Liquid cooled…..

Poser – Dress Poser’s virtual stage with gigabytes of included content: ready-to-pose figures, textures, props and 3D scene elements. Produce new characters with faces from your photographs. Add hair and clothing. Animate and render your scene into photorealistic images and video for web, print and film projects. Export 3D characters to other 3D applications. Get creative with Poser 8!

WorldViz – Lite Edition – VR development  system.

Emagin Z800 3D Visor – 3D Visor with head tracking

Nvidia 3D Kit+Monitor+Vid Card
